Lincoln Marsh

Sun reaches through the lace of trees

as twigs crunch underfoot. A woodpecker

thumps a tree in time

with my hollow steps on the boardwalk.

Unseen birds trill in chorus to

a plane roaring through clear skies.

I pause, shield my eyes, look over

a crowd of cattails haloed,

grass emerging from icy waters

like spears from a fog.
